La glicerina es uno de los compuestos m\u00e1s vers\u00e1tiles producidos a partir de fuentes renovables. Se puede obtener de aceites vegetales o grasas animales. Hoy, gran parte del suministro de glicerina en el mundo proviene del biodiesel. Su origen, o identificaci\u00f3n, data de 1779 por un qu\u00edmico sueco llamado Carl W. Sheele; y durante estos m\u00e1s de 240 a\u00f1os, se han desarrollado numerosas aplicaciones: hay m\u00e1s de 1500 aplicaciones en la literatura, que van desde las m\u00e1s delicadas, como las drogas intravenosas hasta el uso industrial en resinas o explosivos. Naturalmente, el grado de pureza var\u00eda con las necesidades de cada tipo de aplicaci\u00f3n.
Sus caracter\u00edsticas fisicoqu\u00edmicas ayudan a comprender esta variedad de usos: es un l\u00edquido viscoso, estable, incoloro e inodoro, con un sabor ligeramente dulce y totalmente miscible con agua.<\/p>\n

Es pr\u00e1cticamente un comod\u00edn para muchas necesidades, como:
\u2013 Glicerina con funci\u00f3n humectante, es decir, manteniendo la humedad en la piel en formulaciones cosm\u00e9ticas hasta que la humedad en las hojas de tabaco de cigarros y cigarrillos.
\u2013 La glicerina como intermediario qu\u00edmico en la producci\u00f3n de epiclorhidrina, que luego se convertir\u00e1 en resinas epoxi para diversos usos en la industria de pinturas industriales, pisos y piezas decorativas, por ejemplo.
La glicerina fue el primer anticongelante utilizado en los fluidos de radiadores de autom\u00f3viles, y hoy se presenta nuevamente en esta aplicaci\u00f3n como un sustituto renovable de su competidor petroqu\u00edmico.
La industria alimentaria utiliza glicerina con funciones que van desde conservantes, emulsionantes hasta edulcorantes.
